I have direct experience for the position from serving as Vice Chair of the Pierce County Charter Review Commission in 2016, after being elected as Commissioner with 64% of the vote from Council District 7. I bring skills from my 30 years as an attorney in public service. I served as legal advisor to the City of Tacoma Charter Review Committees in 2014 and in 2024 and to multiple other state and local government boards and commissions. I have also served as a board member for several local nonprofits.
  • I am a good listener, and a confident and respectful communicator. I know how to separate opinions from fact, how to conduct reliable research and I am comfortable deferring to an outcome I did not support if I am confident in the process used to reach consensus.
  • I will bring an experienced, objective and professional viewpoint to the charter review process. The most important issue for me is trust and integrity of the public process.
  • My service on the 2016 Pierce County Charter Review Commission and my career path in public service demonstrate my commitment to my ability to achieve success in this position.
As a Charter Review Commissioner I would look closely at Section 3.70 (Election of Sheriff) to explore election vs. appointment and whether the Council size of 7 is still appropriate as Pierce County continues to grow. Over the course of the campaign and as the Commission is convened I will learn of other perceived issues and gaps in the charter.
I am an experienced public servant, a good listener and a good communicator.
I believe the most important responsibilities for the position of Charter Review Commissioner are to understand the function and structure of County government, to avoid a preconceived agenda and to ensure an open and transparent process where all viewpoints are heard and all participants treated with respect.
