Mary C. Noble was a justice on the Kentucky Supreme Court. She was elected to the court in November 2006 to fill a vacancy and was re-elected to an eight-year term in 2008.[1][2] Noble held the 5th Supreme Court District seat, representing the counties of Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Scott, and Woodford.[3]

On June 8, 2011, Noble became the first woman in the history of the Kentucky Supreme Court to preside over a hearing.[4] Noble said, "Most women today probably have more freedom to choose than they've ever had. But we still have very limited opportunity in leadership positions in the government and in business. So, when something like this happens, it's a milestone."[5]

Noble retired at the end of her term in January 2017.[6] She was succeeded by Justice Laurance VanMeter.

Political outlook

In October 2012, political science professors Adam Bonica and Michael Woodruff of Stanford University attempted to determine the partisan ideology of state supreme court justices. They created a scoring system in which a score above 0 indicated a more conservative-leaning ideology, while scores below 0 were more liberal.

Noble received a campaign finance score of -0.12, indicating a liberal ideological leaning. This was more liberal than the average score of 0.17 that justices received in Kentucky.

The study was based on data from campaign contributions by the judges themselves, the partisan leaning of those who contributed to the judges' campaigns, or, in the absence of elections, the ideology of the appointing body (governor or legislature). This study was not a definitive label of a justice, but an academic summary of various relevant factors.[9]
