Should new charter schools be approved in your district? (Not all school boards are empowered to approve charter schools. In those cases, the candidate was directed to answer the question as if the school board were able to do so.)
---
No. I believe our schools are great enough that we do not need charter schools.
Which statement best describes the ideal relationship between the state government and the school board? The state should always defer to school board decisions, defer to school board decisions in most cases, be involved in the district routinely or only intervene in severe cases of misconduct or mismanagement.
The state should defer to school board decisions in most cases.
Are standardized tests an accurate metric of student achievement?
No. Standardized tests cannot account for issues such as English as a second language students or socio-economically deprived students and any specials needs they may have.
What is your stance on the Common Core State Standards Initiative?
Common Core was implemented after my children attended the grades primarily affected by this methodology. I will do research to better understand Common Core.
How should the district handle underperforming teachers? Terminate their contract before any damage is done to students, offer additional training options, put them on a probationary period while they seek to improve or set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district?
Set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district. Underperforming teachers should be given the same opportunity for improvement that employees in other jobs receive: implementation of a performance plan; working with a mentor to improve skills; periodic evaluations to assess performance and determine what other assistance may be needed. The goal is to assist the teacher in improving his/her skills in an encouraging manner.
Should teachers receive merit pay?
No. I'm marking no because there is no maybe. This is an issue I would like to research more thoroughly before giving my answer.
Should the state give money to private schools through a voucher system or scholarship program?
No. The choice to send a student belongs to the student and their parents. The state should not subsidize that decision.
How should expulsion be used in the district?
Expulsion should only be used in the most extreme circumstances. It should be limited to students who have behaved violently or threatened teachers or other students.
What's the most important factor for success in the classroom: student-teacher ratio, the curriculum, teachers, parent involvement or school administration?
Teachers Teachers are the leaders in the classroom. They prepare the lessons and interact with the students on a daily basis.
