An effort to recall City Councilman Saulo Bonilla did not go to a vote in Nogales, Arizona.[1]

Signatures were submitted for verification on May 12, 2025.[2] Recall organizers needed 339 signatures to trigger a recall election. Of the 403 signatures submitted, 293 were verified.[3]

Recall supporters

Nogales resident Mary Darling initiated the recall effort on January 23, 2025. Darling alleged that Bonilla has demonstrated "continuous aggressive, misogynistic behavior, abuse of power, and intimidation of community members."[1]

Recall opponents

Bonilla did not respond to a request for comment from Nogales International.[1]

No specific grounds are required for recall in Arizona. To begin the recall process, supporters must file an application for a recall petition that must be approved by the relevant election office. To get the recall on the ballot, supporters must collect signatures equal to 25% of the votes cast for all candidates at the last election for the relevant office in 120 days.[4]
