June 6, 2018: Twenty-three percent (23%) of small business owners now say that finding qualified workers is their “single most important business problem.” That’s just a single percentage point shy of the all-time record for the 32-year history of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) employment survey.[1]

As a result of the tight labor market, 35% of small businesses are paying their workers and potential workers more money. That’s a record high.

Monday’s Number of the Day noted that this phenomenon is not restricted to small businesses. Walmart is now offering significant tuition subsidies in an effort to retain workers. This comes after Walmart significantly increased the base wage for workers earlier in the year.

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
