Mission
The mission statement of the South Carolina Department of Education reads:[1]

Superintendent
The current South Carolina Superintendent of Education is Ellen Weaver (R). Weaver assumed office in 2023.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education consists of 17 members appointed to four-year terms. One member is appointed by the Governor. The remaining members are appointed by legislators in the state's 16 judicial districts. Board members are responsible for developing annual budget requests, teacher certification requirements and textbook policies.[3]
