Stacy D. Bennett is a judge for the Nassau County Family Court in New York. She has served in this position since 2007, following her election.[1] Bennett won re-election in the general election on November 8, 2016. She ran on the Democratic, Green, Working Families, and Women's Equality party tickets.

Education

Bennett received her B.A. from Boston University in 1989 and her J.D. from Ohio Northern University in 1992.[1]

Career

Bennett began her career in 1992 as an associate of the firm of Richard M. Weiner & Associates. She then served as a partner of Jaspan Schlesinger Hoffman, LLP from 2000 until her election in 2006. She joined the family court bench in 2007.[1]

Bennett ran unsuccessfully for election to the New York Supreme Court 10th Judicial District on November 8. She ran on the Democrat, Independence, and Working Families party lines. She received 4.69 percent of the vote, failing to secure one of the 10 positions on the ballot for the Supreme Court 10th Judicial District.[3][4][5]

Judges of the New York Family Courts all serve 10-year terms but their method of selection varies based on location. Outside of New York City, they are selected through partisan contested elections. In New York City, they are appointed by the mayor. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and county resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[6]
