Two of the five seats on the West Ada School District board of trustees in Idaho were supposed to be up for by-district general election on May 16, 2017, but the election was canceled due to lack of opposition. Incumbents Ed Klopfenstein and Steve Smylie—the only candidates who filed to run in the election—were automatically re-elected to the Zone 1 and 3 seats, respectively.[1][2]
Klopfenstein and Smylie were both appointed to the board in June 2016 after a recall election ousted three board members from office.[3][4]
With two incumbents automatically re-elected due to lack of opposition, the 2017 election contrasted with the district's 2015 election. In 2015, every seat saw opposition, and two new members were elected to the board. Click here for more election trends in the district.
Elections
Voter and candidate information
The West Ada board of trustees consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held on a staggered basis in May of odd-numbered years. Three seats—Zones 2, 4, and 5—were up for election on May 19, 2015, and two seats—Zones 1 and 3—would have been up for election on May 16, 2017, if the election had not been canceled.[5]
Idaho school board candidates had to be at least 18 years old, eligible to vote in the school district, and residents of the zone they sought to represent.[6] To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file by March 17, 2017. The withdrawal deadline was April 1, 2017.[7]
Citizens of the school district could pre-register to vote in this election until April 21, 2017. Same-day registration was also available.[7] Photo identification was required to vote in Idaho.[8]

The 2017 West Ada board of trustees election differed from the district's 2015 election. In 2017, the election was canceled due to lack of opposition, and the two unopposed incumbents won additional terms by default. In contrast, the 2015 race had no unopposed seats. Each seat had a minimum of two candidates, and two newcomers were elected to the board. Two of the three incumbents whose terms were up for election that year ran to retain their seats, but one was defeated by a newcomer.
