AUGUSTA, Maine: Rather surprising gains in the November 2010 midterm elections allowed State Republican lawmakers to wrestle majority control of both houses of the State Legislature from the Democrats who have longed been entrenched there. It is not surprising then to find that after launching the new legislative session on Tuesday, November 30th, 2010, all appointees to the three statewide offices the legislature has the authority to fill were Republicans.[1]
William Schneider, an Assistant United States Attorney and former state representative, was named as State Attorney General following a secret ballot election during a joint House-Senate caucus on Wednesday, December 1st.[2] This marks the first time in at least a decade that a Democrat has not held the statewide governmental position. Schneider, who has previously been nominated by the Republican legislative caucus twice in the past for the office, defeated Janet Mills, the Democratic nominee who was elected as state attorney general in 2009 after G. Steven Rowe resigned to pursue a bid for the state's governorship.
Charles Summers Jr., a former aide to Republican United States Senator Olympia Snowe, was selected as Secretary of State over Democrat Matthew Dunlap, who has held the statewide position for the past five years.[3] The appointment of Summers to the office makes this the first time since 1975, thirty-five years ago, that a Republican will be placed in charge of the state's motor vehicle registration and licensing, elections, corporation registration and the state archive.
