Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. In Maryland's 4th Congressional District, incumbent Donna Edwards (D) chose not to run for re-election in 2016, instead choosing to pursue election to the U.S. Senate. Anthony Brown (D) defeated George McDermott (R), Benjamin Lee Krause (L), Kamesha Clark (G), and Adrian Petrus (D, write-in) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Brown defeated Warren Christopher, Matthew Fogg, Glenn Ivey, Joseline Pena-Melnyk, and Terence Strait in the Democratic primary, while McDermott defeated Robert Broadus, Rob Buck, and David Therrien to win the Republican nomination. The primary elections took place on April 26, 2016. [2][3]

Strait issued the following statement regarding his bid for office:

Many people around the country have given up on politics as hopelessly corrupt. With politicians raising millions of dollars each election cycle, regular working people don't believe their elected officials are representing anybody but their wealthy donors. Tax policy is rigged to support the super-wealthy and multinational corporations, trade policy privileges corporate profits over labor interests, and any suggestion that we take care of those most in need or protect the environment are shot down as being "too expensive." We talk about big government or small government, but put almost no effort into having effective government. In fact, Congressional operations have seemingly been twisted to be as ineffective as possible. Between the near-constant threats of government shutdown, repeated last minute battles over the budget and debt limit, and complete lack of planning for the future, I decided it was time to step up and get involved. I bring a vision for the future to the race, one that I believe Congress desperately needs if it is to address the challenges we will face in this century. We need an ambitious climate plan, a discussion on how our economy will adapt to increasing automation and outsourcing, and a 21st century education system. I can't promise to get everything done myself, but I can promise that I will fight to address those issues. If you change the conversation, you can change the policy, and that will change the world.
