Susan McFerran was a Zone II member of the Fort Smith Public Schools Board of Education. She was appointed by the Board of Education to fill the vacant Zone II seat in 2012 and was unopposed when the seat was up for re-election on September 17, 2013. McFerran ran for re-election on November 8, 2016.

Susan McFerran sought re-election to the Zone II seat on the Fort Smith Public Schools Board of Education on September 17, 2013. She was unopposed. McFerran is a retired elementary school teacher who has taught at schools in the Fort Smith School District and continues to serve as a substitute teacher at private schools in the Fort Smith area. McFerran is married and has three children, who all graduated from Fort Smith schools.[1]

Two of the seven seats on the Fort Smith Public Schools school board were up for general election on September 20, 2016. One seat was up for by-district election and one was up for at-large election. In the race for the open at-large seat, newcomer Talicia Richardson defeated fellow newcomer Greg Murray. Incumbent Susan McFerran defeated challengers Marc Werschem and Brian Means in Zone 2. [2]

Fort Smith School District is located on the western border of Arkansas in Sebastian County. It is one of the two county seats of Sebastian County, and the second largest city in the state of Arkansas. According to the 2010 census, Fort Smith is home to 86,217 residents.[3]

Fort Smith Public Schools is a district comprised of 19 elementary schools, 4 junior high school, 2 senior high schools, and one alternative learning center.[4]

Demographics

Fort Smith underperforms the rest of Arkansas when compared on the basis of median household income, people living below the poverty level, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma. The median household income in Fort Smith was $37,340 compared to $40,149 for the state of Arkansas. 20.7%% of Fort Smith residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to a 19.6% in Arkansas. The US Census also showed the poverty rate in Fort Smith was 22.5%% compared to 18.4% for the entire state.
