Two seats on the Fort Smith Public School Board were up for election on September 17, 2013. Seats up for election were one At Large seat and the Zone II seat.

Fort Smith School District is located on the western border of Arkansas in Sebastian County. It is one of the two county seats of Sebastian County, and the second largest city in the state of Arkansas. According to the 2010 census, Fort Smith was home to 86,217 residents.[1]

As of 2013, Fort Smith Public Schools is comprised of 19 elementary schools, 4 junior high school, 2 senior high schools, and one alternative learning center.[2]

Demographics

As of 2013, the median household income in Fort Smith was $37,340 compared to $40,149 for the state of Arkansas. 20.7%% of Fort Smith residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to a 19.6% in Arkansas. The US Census also showed the poverty rate in Fort Smith was 22.5%% compared to 18.4% for the entire state. The US Census also found that 20.7% of Fort Smith residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to a 19.6% in Arkansas.[3]

Method of board member selection

The Fort Smith Public School Board of Education consists of seven members, all of whom are elected to three year terms. Three members are elected by the district At Large, while the four remaining seats represent a specific geographic area or zone. Board member terms are staggered so that at least two members are to be elected each year on the third Tuesday in September. There are no primary elections. One At Large and the Zone II seat were up for election in 2013. One At Large seat and the Zone III seat are up for election in 2014. One At Large Seat, the Zone I, and the Zone IV seat are up for election in 2015.

In 2012, Wyman R. Wade Jr., Russell C. Owen, Jeannie Cole, and Yvonne L. Keaton-Martin all won unopposed elections for seats on the Fort Smith Public School Board.[4]

2011

In 2011, Deanie Mehl and Shannon L. Blatt both won unopposed elections for seats on the Fort Smith Public School Board.[5]
