Bayonne School District is a school district in New Jersey. The district was the 20th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 10,007 students.[1]
About the district
Bayonne School District is located in northwest New Jersey in Hudson County. The seat of county government is Jersey City. Hudson County was home to an estimated 677,983 residents between 2010 and 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2]
Demographics
Hudson County slightly outperformed New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 37.5 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had obtained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 36.8 percent of all state residents. The median household income in the county was $59,741, compared to $72,093 statewide. County residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 17.7 percent, while that rate was 10.8 percent for all state residents.[2]

The current superintendent of Bayonne School District is Dr. Patricia L. McGeehan. She was first appointed to the position in 2000, and her contract ran through June 30, 2017. The Bayonne school board declined to renew her contract on June 29, 2016.[3][4]
School board elections
The Bayonne Board of Education is overseen by a nine-member board elected at large to three-year terms. From 1979 to 2014, the members of the board were appointed by the mayor rather than elected.[5] On November 4, 2014, voters approved a ballot question changing the board from a system of appointed membership to one of elected membership, with 76.5 percent voting for the change. The board's first elected members won their seats in the November 2015 general election.[6]

Election dates
The Bayonne School District school board consists of nine members elected at large to three-year terms. Four seats were up for election in 2016, and three seats were up for election in 2017.
Budget
From 1993 to 2013, the Bayonne School District had an average of $101,873,714 in revenue and $102,675,524 in expenditures, according to the United States Census Bureau's survey of school system finances. The district had a yearly average of $48,820,762 in outstanding debt. The district retired $2,326,000 of its debt and issued $6,985,429 in new debt each year on average.[7]
