Daniel B. “Dan” Maes (b. July 1, 1961) was the Republican nominee for Governor of Colorado in 2010.
Biography
Maes was born in the Chicago area. One of six children, his father moved the family to Rib Lake in rural Wisconsin, where Maes grew up. At age ten, he lost his father to alcohol related illness. He credits his mother's influence and encouragement in pushing him to earn a college degree.
After earning an undergraduate degree in sociology, Maes served on Liberal, Kansas police force for two years, from 1983 to 1985. While participating in an undercover investigation with the Liberal police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, he was fired for disclosing to his then-fiance's family that they were targets of the investigation. His appeal was denied on the grounds that he had admitted to disclosing details of the investigation to his fiance and her family.
Following the loss of his job, he moved to Colorado. Beginning in 1990, he worked in sales for several telecom companies. In 2003, he accepted a position with a credit agency.
From 2005 to 2009, Maes owned his own credit reporting agency, Amaesing Credit Solutions, LLC. In March of 2009 he sold the business and has been focusing exclusively on his gubernatorial campaign since.
Though he later married his fiance, the marriage faltered and they were soon divorced. He has one daughter from that marriage, Jordan. She earned her undergraduate degree in 2009 and works full-time for her father's race.
Maes later remarried. He and his wife, Karen, met in 1988 when she interviewed for a position with his company. They married in 1990 in the mountain resort town of Estes Park. The Maes have two children of their own and in reside in Evergreen, a suburb to the west of Denver.

Elections
2010
Maes narrowly defeated former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis in the August 10 primary by a margin of 50.6% to 49.3%.
Maes faced John Hickenlooper (D), Jaimes Brown (L), and Tom Tancredo (C) in the general election on November 2, 2010. Maes lost to Hickenlooper.[1]
