Campaign themes
2015
Roberts published a list of his priorities on his campaign website:
“ | Teachers, Administrators, and Staff
TEACHERS need to have the skills and qualifications to effectively help our students learn. They must also have the time, resources, and support to do their job to the best of their ability. We must pay our employees so we are competitive with other county districts. ADMINISTRATORS and other STAFF have roles as both educators and business leaders. As educators, they must help identify, develop, and implement learning approaches, procedures, and programs which address the needs of all students. They must also serve as resources for the teachers. As business leaders, they must responsibly manage the finances to maintain the account balances necessary to meet future needs. They must also manage the procedural policies of the district to provide the best benefit to the students, employees, and district in general. Support staff serve a critical role in helping the district operate to the benefit of all. Infrastructure INFRASTRUCTURE is important to student achievement by creating a proper environment that allows the students to grow and learn. This requires well designed and maintained facilities and appropriate resources such as books, technology, and other classroom equipment. Proper systems and programs work with the other aspects of a good infrastructure to promote a good educational experience. I would recommend establishing a committee of patrons and district staff to study our facilities, including sports complexes, with the goal of identifying needed improvements to bring our facilities to a level comparable to the majority of county districts. Student Responsibility STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY must be emphasized and promoted. Every student must respect the right of other students to learn and get an education in a safe environment. Students who choose to not follow the district's behavior guidelines must understand that their actions will have consequences and will result in the enforcement of the district’s discipline guidelines. The district must consider freeing space within the district (such as potentially reorganizing the Middle School configuration) to provide the space to house and educate these students. Intensive remediation and counseling would be provided with the goal of the student returning to their home school with the skills and motivation to be successful. Parent and Community Involvement PARENT and COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT are critical in motivating students to do their best. In particular, parents must understand and accept the critical role they play in their child’s education. Lacking adequate parental involvement, we must find ways to help those students who want to learn but need support. Remediation must be provided as necessary to help these students achieve.[4] |

—Richard Roberts' campaign website (2015)[5] |
Roberts completed a voter guide profile for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“ | What are your top priorities for the district?
1. Improve student achievement by providing the best instruction, programs, resources and facilities possible. This also requires students to respect the right of other students to learn and get an education in a safe environment. 2. Improve the overall competitiveness and attractiveness of the Hazelwood School District relative to other schools within St. Louis County. Why are you qualified to serve in this office? I come from a family of educators, both administrators and teachers, so I am familiar with school operations and challenges. I personally have worked for over 25 years in the commercial sector as a manager and I know what it takes for an individual to be successful in the business world. I believe my knowledge and experience in these two areas can benefit the board.[4] |
