Five seats on the Pocono Mountain School Board were up for election on November 5, 2013. The candidate field was narrowed in a primary election held on May 21, 2013.
Annabella Lastowski, Dawn Wood, John Coyle and Ricky D. Smith ran unopposed and won the four Region 1 and Region 2 seats. Michael A. Stern defeated Leigh Stelzer for the Region 3 seat.
About the district
Pocono Mountain School District is located in Monroe County in eastern Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 Census, the county was home to 168,798 residents.[1]
Demographics
The county outperforms the rest of Pennsylvania based on average household income and poverty rate, but underperforms in higher education achievement. According to the 2010 Census, the median household income in Monroe County is $57,700 compared to Pennsylvania's statewide median of $51,651. The poverty rate in Monroe County is 11.3% while the state average is 12.6%. The percentage of residents over 25 with a bachelor's degree or higher in Monroe County is 23.3% while the percentage in Pennsylvania overall is 26.7%.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Pocono Mountain School Board consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. The members of the board are elected by voters in three regions. The primary election for the Pocono Mountain School Board was held on May 21, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Five seats were up for election on November 5, 2013 and the remaining four seats are up for election in November 3, 2015.

What was at stake?
Five seats were at stake in the November 5 election. Ricky D. Smith and John Coyle were the only incumbents seeking re-election. Region 1 representative Ed Mayotte bid for re-election ended following a loss in the primary.

Additional elections on the ballot
In addition to the school board race, residents of Pocono Public School District had statewide, countywide, and local items on the ballot. They voted on a Judge of the Superior Court in a statewide race. Additionally, they voted for Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, Jury Commissioner, and various Magisterial District Judges. There was also mayoral, treasurer, coroner, council member, tax collector, judge of elections, and inspector of elections races on the ballot.[4]
