District 32 member Teresa Milio Birge won her second retention election to the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education on November 4, 2014.[1]
About the district
Anne Arundel County Public Schools serves the county of the same name in Maryland. The county was home to an estimated 560,133 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] Anne Arundel County Public Schools was the fifth-largest school district by enrollment in Maryland in the 2012–2013 school year, serving 77,770 students.[3]
Demographics
Anne Arundel County outperformed the state of Maryland as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2009 to 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 37.1 percent of county residents aged 25 and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 36.8 percent statewide. The median household income for the county was $87,430 compared to $73,538 for the state. County residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 6.3 percent, while that rate was 9.8 percent for state residents.[2]

Voter and candidate information
As of the 2014 election, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education was composed of nine members: eight adult registered voters of the county and one student representative. The eight adult members were appointed by the Governor of Maryland to five-year terms; however, these members were subject to retention elections at the general election following their first full year of service.[5]
Five of the gubernatorial appointees had to be from one of the five legislative districts that covered Anne Arundel County: Districts 30, 31, 32, 33, and 21. The other three adult members were appointed at-large.[5]
The ninth member of the board was a student representative. School boards across the country often include a student representative, but usually only in an advisory, nonvoting capacity. Anne Arudel's student member was uncommon in that the student had the same voting rights and privileges as other board members.[5]
The student member is elected to a one-year term by the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (CRASC) and must be confirmed by the governor. The term begins on July 1 following election and confirmation and continues until a successor is qualified.[5]
