Two seats on the New Rochelle School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014. Incumbent Jeffrey Hastie and challenger Sal Fernandez defeated Rick Monzon to win the two seats. Fellow board member Deirdre Polow did not file for re-election.[1]

New Rochelle School District is located in Westchester County, New York. The county seat of Westchester County is White Plains, New York. Westchester County had a population of 968,802 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] New Rochelle was the 11th-largest school district in New York, serving 10,781 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[3]

Demographics

Westchester County outperformed the rest of New York in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 44.8 percent of Westchester County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 32.8 percent for New York as a whole. The median household income in Westchester County was $81,093 compared to $57,683 for the state of New York. The poverty rate in Westchester County was 9.3 percent compared to 14.9 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the New Rochelle School District Board of Education consisted of nine members. All members are elected to five-year terms. Board members are elected at-large by the district as a whole. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 20, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014 and two seats will be up for election in 2015.

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 30, 2014. Candidates had to file nominating petitions with at least 100 legitimate signatures to get on the ballot.[5][6]
