Judge Allen reaches age of mandatory retirement

Graham, North Carolina: Judge J. B. Allen, Jr. retired from his position as Superior Court judge of the North Carolina 15A Judicial District on July 2, 2010 due to his age. He will turn 72 this month, which is the age of mandatory retirement in North Carolina. He has served in this position since 1986 and says that he is not looking forward to retirement. "I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to," he said.
Judge Allen began his career with Western Electric before deciding to become a lawyer. He graduated from law school in 1971. He worked as an assistant district attorney and a district court judge before he was elected to a superior court judgeship in 1986. He is well-respected by the local legal community.[1]
