Arizona: Candidate Alejandrina Cabrera for the City Council in the San Luis border community has been struck from the ballot by Judge John Nelson of the Yuma County Superior Court due to her lack of knowing and being able to speak the English language proficiently enough to do her job.[1]
“I speak little English, but my English is fine for San Luis," said Ms. Cabrera in an interview in her lawyer's office.[2]
However, professor and linguist William G. Eggington, who conducted various interviews and tests on Ms. Cabrera, found that her English was of “basic survival level” and did not meet the requirements that are needed to be able to participate in city business.[1]
Ms. Cabrera's lawyers have stated that they might appeal the case to the Arizona Supreme Court.[1]
