South Carolina

COLUMBIA, South Carolina: Marlon Kimpson won a Democratic primary runoff on August 27 for the open seat in State Senate District 42.[1][2]

Kimpson defeated Maurice Washington in the runoff. The seat was vacated by Robert Ford's resignation on May 31, 2013 amidst an ethics investigation.[3]

The seat is heavily Democratic -- Ford ran unopposed for re-election in 2012 and won by nearly 60 percentage points in 2008. Kimpson will face Billy Shuman (R), Alex Thornton (L), and Rodney Travis (L) in the special election, which takes place on October 10.[4]
