A referendum to require lawyers for abused animals was on the ballot in Switzerland at a special election on March 7, 2010. It was defeated by a vote of 70.5% against to 29.5% in favor.

The referendum proposed to require the Swiss government to provide lawyers for animals during animal abuse cases. The effort was sponsored by Antoine Goetschel, an animal rights lawyer. Proponents collected 140,000 signatures to qualify the measure for the ballot. [1][2]
