Bulgarian Referendum Against Turkey EU Membership, 2010
Proponents in Bulgaria collected signatures for a Referendum Against Turkey's Membership in the European Union (EU) in 2010.
The VMRO Bulgarian Nationalist party sponsored the referendum. The group said, "Turkey is just not a European country. The vast part of Turkey's territory (97 percent) is in Asia. There is no way for Turkey to become an EU member without Bulgaria's support and we must prevent our politicians from supporting Turkey."[1][2][3]
Bulgarians needed to collect 500,000 signatures from registered voters in order to have the referendum appear on the ballot for a vote. The referendum could also have appeared on the ballot if 200,000 valid signatures were submitted and if the Bulgarian parliament decided to call a referendum. Signatures were due by July 19, 2010.[4][5]Proponents submitted 330,000 signatures and 200,000 were found to be valid.[6][7]
