The Wisconsin State Legislature can place a legislatively referred state statute before voters if they include a provision in the bill requiring voter approval. A simple majority vote is required in both the Wisconsin State Senate and the Wisconsin House of Representatives to pass a state law.

This measure was introduced as Assembly Bill 975 on January 19, 2024. On January 25, 2024, the state Assembly passed AB 975 in a vote of 53-46. Of the 64 Republicans in the Assembly, 53 voted in favor of AB 975, and 11 voted against it. All 35 Democrats voted against it. It did not receive a vote in the Senate before the legislature adjourned.[1]
