Bill Lofy is a Democratic political consultant in Vermont. He has been active in politics since 1999, when he worked for former Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (D). He also served as chief of staff for Governor of Vermont Peter Shumlin (D).

Career

Lofy studied political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1990 to 1995 before volunteering with the Peace Corps in West Africa from 1997 to 1999. When he returned to the United States, Lofy earned a master's degree in development economics and international development from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 2003.[1]

While he was in graduate school, Lofy also worked as political director for former Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (D) from 1999 to 2001. Lofy became the communications director for Wellstone Action in 2003 and worked for the organization until 2006. Wellstone Action is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minn., that aims to combine electoral politics, public policy and grassroots organizing "to create progressive change." During that time, Lofy wrote Paul Wellstone: The Life of a Passionate Progressive, which chronicled the late senator's life and career and aimed to be "a guide to what ails political life today."[1][2][3][4]

After leaving Wellstone Action, Lofy became deputy political director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and worked for the organization from 2007 to 2010.[1]

Governor of Vermont Peter Shumlin (D) hired Lofy as his chief of staff in 2011. After two legislative sessions and a successful re-election campaign, Lofy left Gov. Shumlin's office in late 2012 to work as a senior advisor for the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), where Shumlin became executive director for 2013. Lofy remained a senior advisor for the DGA until 2014.[1][5][4][6][7]

In 2013, Campaigns & Elections named Lofy a top Democratic influencer in Vermont.[8]

In June 2013, Lofy became a strategic advisor for Green Mountain Power, a Vermont energy company. He advised the company until May 2015.[1][9]

Lofy Strategies

Lofy founded Lofy Strategies, his Jericho, Vt.-based political and business consulting firm, in July 2015. With Lofy Strategies, he says he aims to help "renewable energy advocates, political campaign committees, emerging businesses in the legalized cannabis industry, and progressive advocacy groups."[1][5]

Lofy served on the steering committee of the Vermont Cannabis Collaborative, which aims to "aid in the creation of a legislative foundation that will promote Common Sense Commerce for the marijuana movement."[10]
