Connecticut Commissioner of Education

Dianna Wentzell is a former Connecticut commissioner of education. The state board of education named her to the position in January 2015, after former Commissioner Stefan Pryor stepped down.[1][2][3] The board, with the consent of Governor Dan Malloy (D) nominated Wentzell to replace Pryor permanently on April 17, 2015. Her appointment was confirmed by the Connecticut State Senate in May.[4][5] Wentzell left the office in 2019.[6]

Before joining the Connecticut Department of Education, Wentzell was a social studies teacher. She also served as assistant superintendent of schools in Hartford, Connecticut. Upon joining the Department of Education in 2013, Wentzell began to work as the chief academic officer, overseeing the Bureau of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, and the Standards Implementation Division.[7]

Political career

Connecticut Commissioner of Education (2015-2019)

Wentzell served as state education commissioner from 2015 to 2019. The Connecticut Board of Education first appointed her interim commissioner to fill the seat left vacant by resigned officeholder Stefan Pryor.[2] The board, with the consent of Governor Dan Malloy, (D) promoted her from interim commissioner to permanent commissioner on April 17, 2015.

Wentzell was first appointed interim Connecticut commissioner of education by the state board of education in January 2015. The board and Gov. Malloy formally nominated her for the commissioner's post in April. She was confirmed by the Connecticut State Senate in May.[4][5][9]
