Campaign themes

2016

Wiginton highlighted the following statement on her campaign website:

I am a humble woman...EXTREMELY CONFIDENT...but humble. I have spent my adult life effecting change by working with and inspiring young people; by touching hearts and lives while communicating "truths" through my art. I am a leader in my community; a devout mother, mentor, counselor, and advocate for my students. I am a committed activist, servant, and agent of change in my community.

I have served the students, families, and community of McClymonds High School for the past 5 yrs. I am a proud West Oaklander and an even prouder MACK Warrior. I have seen five classes of seniors graduate from McClymonds, and at the end of this academic year, I will watch my first group of 7th graders (from West Oakland Middle School and Westlake Middle School) walk the stage and receive their high school diplomas.

I was raised in an African-centered village in Pomona, CA with the principles "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child"; "Each One Teach One," and "I am because we are...We are because I am" embedded in my core. I wake up everyday with the sole desire to do "all that I can, in anyway I can, to leave my community more beautiful and beneficial than when I inherited it" and to love my students and community "because of who they are and in spite of who they are." I only do heart jobs..jobs that I love, and I am deeply in love with, passionate about, and honored to be in service to the beautiful people around me.

Still, given all of that, I never would have assumed that I would be the right person to serve as the school board representative. However, members of my community saw something in me...several students, staff, parents, alumni, and community members have asked me to step into leadership and run for the seat of District 3 School Board Member. I have given it a great deal of thought, and I have agreed. What better way to be in service to my students and community? The people have asked me to run for office, and I hope to have the honor of holding the people's seat. I believe that those MOST impacted by the educational system should have the GREATEST voice at the table. If elected to serve District 3, I will make sure that your voices are at the policy table.

With immense gratitude,

Kharyshi aka "Ms. K"[11]
