Nick Khouri is a former Treasurer of Michigan. He was appointed to the post by Gov. Rick Snyder (R) to succeed outgoing treasurer Kevin Clinton who resigned in order to return to the private sector. Prior to becoming treasurer, Khouri worked in the energy industry. He also served as the chief deputy treasurer of Michigan in the 1990s under former-Treasurer Doug Roberts.[1] Khouri left office in 2019.

Originally from Flint, Michigan, Nick Khouri earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in economics from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, respectively.[2] Khouri began his career in public service serving as the chief economist to the Senate Fiscal Agency in Michigan. After that, he was appointed chief deputy treasurer of Michigan by former Gov. John Engler. Khouri served in this position from 1991-1997.

In addition to his work in the public sector, Khouri served in various capacities in the private sector, including a brief stint as the vice president of Public Sector Consultants from 1997-1999. Immediately prior to his appointment as treasurer, Khouri was the senior vice president of corporate affairs at DTE Energy in Detroit, Michigan. He resigned his post at DTE in April in order to assume the responsibilities as treasurer.[3][4]

Political career

Michigan Treasurer (2015-2019)

Nick Khouri was appointed Michigan Treasurer on March 17, 2015 to replace outgoing treasurer [Kevin Clinton] by Gov. Rick Snyder (R). Khouri assumed his duties on April 20, 2015. Under Khouri's leadership, the [Michigan|state of Michigan] began implementing a tax collection system in the city of Detroit whereby the state will be responsible for collecting municipal income taxes.[6]

Chief Deputy Treasurer (1991-1997)

Khouri served as chief deputy treasurer under former state treasurer Douglas Roberts. During this time, he suggested that the state Treasury Department collect municipal as well as state taxes from Michigan residents. However, this policy would not begin to be implemented until Khouri himself became treasurer two decades later.[7]

Nick Khouri was appointed Michigan Treasurer by Gov. Rick Snyder effective April 20, 2015, making Khouri the third state treasurer to serve under Gov. Snyder.[8]

Khouri was appointed chief deputy treasurer in 1991 by Governor John Engler (R).[9]
