Two of the five seats on the Charlotte County Public Schools Board of Education were up for by-district primary election on August 30, 2016. Kim Amontree defeated fellow newcomers Robert Dolar and Joseph Williams for the District 2 seat. Wendy Atkinson won the District 5 seat in the primary against David Morris.[2] The District 3 seat was originally set to be on the ballot, but when incumbent Bob Segur was unopposed in his bid for re-election at the passing of the filing deadline, the election for the seat was canceled and Segur was automatically re-elected.

Charlotte County Public Schools serves the county of the same name in southwestern Florida. The city of Punta Gorda is the county seat. The county was home to an estimated 173,115 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] The district was the 32nd-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 16,264 students.[5]

Charlotte County underperformed compared to Florida as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 20.9 percent of county residents aged 25 and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 26.8 percent statewide. The median household income for the county was $44,265 compared to $47,212 for the state. County residents lived below poverty level at a rate of 11.9 percent, while that rate was 16.5 percent for state residents.[4]
