Ryan McKenna (b. April 27, 1973, in Barnhart, Missouri) was the Missouri Director of Labor and Industrial Relations. He was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon in December 2013 and held the office until December 2016.[1] McKenna's appointment relieved Julie Gibson from her responsibilities as acting director. Gibson had filling in for former director Larry Rebman since his departure in March 2013.[2]

McKenna is a former Democratic member of the Missouri State Senate, representing District 22 from 2007 to 2013. McKenna resigned in December 2013 after being appointed Director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.[3]

McKenna served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007.

Biography

McKenna attended Jefferson College in 1993, and received his B.S. in education from Southwest Missouri State University in 1997. His professional experience includes working as a construction marketing representative for LECET and a union laborer for Fred Weber, Inc.

McKenna represented District 22 in the Missouri State Senate from 2007 to 2013. He resigned in December 2013 after being appointed Director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.[4]

Seersucker suit amendment

In April 2013, McKenna offered a hand-written amendment to a higher education funding bill that would have banned anyone over the age of eight from wearing seersucker suits in Missouri. "Any person living in this state aged 8 and under may wear seersucker suits at their leisure. Any person over the age of 8 living in this state may not wear seersucker suits because adults look ridiculous in seersucker suits," read the amendment, which was eventually withdrawn. McKenna admitted that "[i]t probably wasn't germane to the bill. It was all in jest anyway."[5]

Missouri House of Representatives (1999-2007)

McKenna served as a Democratic member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1999 until ascending to the state senate in 2007.
