Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Todd's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • A Rigged Economy / A Living Wage: Here are the undisputed facts: The U.S. economy as it currently functions is redistributing wealth from the poor and the middle class to the wealthiest one percent at an accelerating pace, leading to income and wealth inequality not seen since the Gilded Age of the Robber Barons nearly 100 years ago. Who is content with a society where the top one-tenth of one percent owns as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent?
  • Climate Change Action: Here the metaphor is this: Our train is firmly on track, steaming along and adding coal (or the fossil fuel of your choice) into the engine – even though we’ve been told by those who know that the bridge ahead is out and the plunge into the gorge will be the tragic end of the journey. Please let’s not go there!
  • Democracy: Elections & Campaign Finance (& Lobbying) Reform: We’ve slid off the path of a representative democracy – one person one vote – and found ourselves in a plutocracy: a country controlled by the wealthy one percent - one dollar one vote. This is a systemic corruption of money in politics which is costing us our democracy. This is a systemic corruption in which representatives spend up to fifty percent of their time dialing for dollars, end up representing corporate special interests, and then pass through the revolving door to become overpaid lobbyists as the pinnacle of their career path. Until this is changed, hope for real progress on all the other issues is an illusion.
  • Civil Rights & Social Justice Issues: Every human being has the right to be treated with dignity and all individuals residing in the United States deserve equal protection. That means that all human beings are created equal, born with the right to equality, safety, and respect. I support the rights of individuals, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, age, disability, national origin, political orientation, socio-economic status or religion, to live freely, and all individuals must be extended equal rights.
  • Education: College Debt in Colorado: Another example of what is wrong with our whole economic system is the fact that, on the one hand, we proclaim the necessity of a college education for any young person who wants to avoid living in poverty. Then we realize that the average graduate leaves college with a student debt load of $35,000 to $40,000 (and many exceeding $100,000), and then we learn that there aren’t enough good jobs available for these eager citizens to begin working in their chosen fields. There is much that is wrong with this picture!
