Judith Kaye is a former chief judge of the State of New York Court of Appeals, New York's court of last resort. She was appointed chief judge of the court by Governor Mario Cuomo on February 22, 1993, confirmed by the New York State Senate on March 17, and sworn in on March 23, 1993. Judge Kaye, the first chief judge ever to complete a full fourteen-year term, was appointed to a second term by Governor Eliot Spitzer on February 7, 2007, confirmed by the New York State Senate on March 6, and sworn in on March 19, 2007.

She is the first woman to occupy the state judiciary's highest office. She became the first woman to serve on New York State's highest court when Governor Cuomo appointed her to the office of associate judge of the State of New York Court of Appeals on September 12, 1983.[1] Kaye retired from the court in December 2008.[2]

Kaye died in January 2016 at the age of 77.[3]

Kaye received her undergraduate degree from Barnard College in 1958 and her LL.B. from the New York University School of Law in 1962.[1]
