I'm a former CCISD teacher running for Board of Trustees- District 1. As an educator, I know first-hand the challenges our teachers are facing. In order to serve our students, we must support our teachers. If elected, I promise to support the hard-working educators that serve CCISD. Our children deserve no less.
  • District Testing: Our students are over-tested. For some students, up to 25% of instructional days are interrupted by standardized testing. Only a handful of these assessments are mandated by the state. Most are district-mandated benchmarks, Common Formative Assessments, and MAP tests. We need to reduce the number of instructional days disrupted by testing by at least half.
  • Safety: Every student and teacher is entitled to expect a safe environment in their schools. School administrators need to be free from excessive paperwork so they are available to be present in the hallways. Furthermore, they should be allowed to permanently remove any student who threatens the safety of their schools.
  • Respecting Teachers’ Time: Probably the thing teachers need the most is more time. The district and campuses should not mandate any new initiatives without evaluating the amount of time they will cost teachers and offsetting that time by removing other tasks and duties from their responsibilities. Teachers need to have adequate time to devote to student learning and less busy work.
Diversity and inclusion are fundamental to education. The classroom should be a safe space for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, or physical or mental abilities.

Science education is vital to a functioning society. The future leaders of the world need to understand science if they are going to be able to face the problems caused by a changing planet. Politicizing the teaching of science is a dangerous step backward and a threat to progress.

Banning books is detrimental to our students. Teachers and librarians are professionals who should be trusted to provide age-appropriate books that will broaden students’ minds. Removing books that address issues a handful of adults find uncomfortable discourages freedom of thought and undermines the purpose of education.
