Candidate Connection

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

* Establish a vision and strategic plan for the District

  • Evaluate and manage the budget responsibly
  • Innovate and collaborate with Superintendent and administration

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

* Special Education

  • Lower socio-economic student achievement
  • English language learners
If we can create and incorporate policies that help ALL students, then everyone rises.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My father. Open minded, a great listener and genuinely cares about your story. He leads by example. He doesn't brag. He taught me to put my head down, work hard and to always leave things better than you found them.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

I am not too sure that I can point to a particular film or book that captures my philosophy, however, I can say that reading Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged was impactful. I would encourage people to check those two books out if they have not yet read them.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

What's the old saying? "If you don't stand for something, then you will fall for anything...." I believe that having anchoring principles is important. I believe that listening is a critical and woefully underutilized skill set in today's political landscape. Equally important is to be able to admit and acknowledge when you are wrong. Own it. Correct it if you can, and learn from it.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Objectivity. That is the lens that I strive to look through no matter what the issue is.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Integrity Collaboration Community Connectedness

What legacy would you like to leave?

That the parents, teachers and most importantly, the students of our District can say without hesitation that Amy Flicker "left it better than she found it."

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The hostage negotiations in Iran and Jimmy Carter.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Receptionist at the Chamber of Commerce. I was awful! I had no training, but was put on a switchboard of sorts, and dropped or lost most of the incoming calls... I think they would have been better off letting the phone just ring all day long!

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Thanksgiving.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

The people who live in it.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

To attract and retain top talent and hire the best Superintendent for the role. After that, it is to collaborate with one another to set a vision for the District, create policies and procedures that support that vision, and hold accountable those who are responsible for implementing and executing that vision.

Who are your constituents?

My immediate constituents are the rock star community members of Encinitas and Leucadia! In addition, I also consider that ALL Trustee Areas should be an extension of that circle.

How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?

Listening to the community, teachers and students. Being innovative and forward thinking in our approaches. Remembering that each and every student matters, and that all children can learn.

What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?

I have served as PTA President in both the elementary and high school Districts. I currently serve on the Executive Board of the North County Coastal Regional PTA. I believe that parent involvement within the school district and community that you live in is very important.

Do you believe it is important to intentionally recruit with the aim of diversifying the district’s faculty, staff, and administration? If so, what would be your policy to achieve this?

I believe that it is imperative to recruit the best talent and experience there is out there.

What issues get in the way of quality education? How would you address these obstacles?

Funding. Expecting excellence in education but not providing the adequate funding to do so. The state of CA continuously ranks towards the bottom of our 50 states. We talk a good game of how we value education, but we aren't putting our money where our mouth is. Investing in education means that we are investing in our youth. It is one of the best investments we can make.

What type of skills should students be learning for success in the 21st century?

Relevant ones. Students should be able to effectively communicate, collaborate and problem solve. Students must be adaptable, and agile. They need to listen first, and then ask clear and concise questions.

How might you improve the value of a high school diploma? What should a 21st century diploma reflect?

I like that the implementation of STEM has allowed for the emergence of STEAM to occur. I believe that creativity is an important component to 21st century learning, and future careers.

In what areas would you like to expand curriculum? For example, do you see a need for advanced technical training or apprenticeships? What sort of innovative programming would you advance if given the opportunity?

I believe that basic computer programming should be a requirement for today's graduates.

What principles drive your policies for safety in schools?

My father was an FBI Agent. I have a deep respect for law enforcement. However, law enforcement cannot be our first line of defense. We must be proactive in our approach.

How might you support the mental health needs of students/faculty/staff?

This is an extremely important area of focus for today's student. We can put up fences, have metal detectors, security badges, etc. However, the evidence has repeatedly shown us, that threats of violence carried out have all occurred once the person is INSIDE the school. We need to have meaningful social and emotional wellness programming in place for students so that we can help to mitigate if not prevent these issues from arising. And if they do, we have a clear path to safety.

What role do you imagine technology playing in (and outside) the classroom in the future? How would you prepare the district for this?

It's already an integral part of the classroom. I do not foresee that changing.
