Notable Quote of the Day

“In my presidential campaigns, all the media wanted was my reaction to the spoiler charge. It didn’t matter that I worked on overdue reforms mostly supported by a majority of the public. It didn’t matter that these initiatives had been taken off the table by the two major parties. The label will surely plague [Howard] Schultz too.”
– Ralph Nader

Democrats

  • Democratic candidates are traveling to California in the coming weeks for early fundraisers. Sen. Cory Booker will attend a reception at the home of Laura and Gary Lauder on Feb. 23, while Sen. Kamala Harris will attend a fundraiser Sunday hosted by Susie Tompkins Buell. Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro is also reaching out to potential donors during a visit to the San Francisco Bay Area next week.

  • Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was not an enemy of the United States “because Syria does not pose a direct threat to the United States.” She continued, “My point is that whether it is Syria or any of these other countries, we need to look at how their interests are counter to or aligned with ours.”

  • The Washington Post reported that Sen. Elizabeth Warren listed her race as “American Indian” on a Texas bar registration card in 1986. “As Senator Warren has said she is not a citizen of any tribe and only tribes determine tribal citizenship. She is sorry that she was not more mindful of this earlier in her career,” Warren spokesperson Kristen Orthman said in a statement. Last week, Warren apologized to the Cherokee Nation for releasing a DNA test to show she had Native American heritage.

Republicans

  • President Donald Trump will hold his first campaign rally of the year in El Paso, Texas, on Monday. Campaign executive director Michael Glassner said, “As the President continues his fight to secure our border, there’s no better place to demonstrate that walls work than in El Paso.”

  • Trump is also looking to expand his 2020 communications team, interviewing candidates for positions ranging from communications director to press secretary, CNBC reported.

On the Cusp: Tracking Potential Candidates
