Rep. Alan Nunnelee died on Friday, February 6, 2015, at the age of 56. In June 2014, Nunnelee suffered a stroke while undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. Since the stroke, Nunnelee saw a steady decline in health. At the end of December, he developed hematoma in his leg, which caused him to be unable to travel to the swearing-in of the 114th United States Congress. Instead, Nunnelee took his oath of office from a Mississippi federal judge.[1]
Nunnelee was elected during the tea party wave of 2010, unseating incumbent Rep. Travis Childers (D). In the midst of his illness, Nunnelee decisively carried the seat, winning re-election with 67.9 percent of the vote in 2014.[2]
Nunnelee's family released a statement upon his death: "Congressman Alan Nunnelee has gone home to be with Jesus. He was well loved and will be greatly missed." He leaves behind his wife, Tori, and three children.[3]
Members of Congress took to social media after the news of Nunnelee's death became public:
