Sheppard was also a candidate for District 5 representative on the Orlando City Council in Florida. Sheppard initially filed for the general election on November 7, 2017, but did not qualify for the ballot because he did not submit the necessary paperwork.

The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was September 8, 2017. Three of seven council seats were up for election.
