An effort in Macomb Township, Michigan, to recall Trustee Dino Bucci was initiated in April 2018. The Macomb County Election Board approved the recall petition for circulation on May 10, 2018.[1] Recall organizers failed to submit enough signatures to move the recall forward.[2]

Recall supporters

The recall effort was organized by Macomb resident Tom Sokol. Petition language suggested that Bucci should have been recalled for voting in favor of a salary increase for the township's deputy supervisor and for failing to attend trustee meetings. Bucci began being absent from trustee meetings in November 2017 after he was indicted on 18 counts of public corruption charges.[1]

Recall opponents

Bucci gave no official comment on the recall petition beginning circulation.[1]

Each recall petition in Michigan must be approved for circulation during a clarity hearing held by the county election commission. This hearing determines if the charges made in the petition are clear enough for a voter to understand. If approved for circulation, a recall organizer can initiate the signature-gathering process. The recall was approved in a clarity meeting on May 10, 2018. Sokol was required to gather about 6,900 valid signatures from town residents in order to trigger a recall election.[1] About 3,100 signatures were gathered by petitioners.[2]
