Campaign themes

2014

On his campaign website, Scruggs highlighted the following issues:[1]

Transportation

  • Excerpt: "Anyone with a southwest commute knows Austin is in a transportation crisis. Our rapid growth has far outpaced our infrastructure for some time – and our ability to play catch up is limited by fiscal and environmental challenges.Tackling this will take prolonged commitment and an innovative, yet balanced approach."

Conservation

  • Excerpt: "Enjoying the natural beauty of Central Texas comes with the responsibility to preserve and maintain our natural resources. Protecting these resources through conservation serves to enhance our quality of life and build a stronger, more sustainable future."

Affordability

  • Excerpt: "In District 8 and across this city, too many families with children are faced with soaring property tax bills. Especially hard hit are middle class families who may have moved here 15 years ago, when homes were considered more affordable. Faced with rising taxes and years left on a mortgage, some feel as if they they [sic] must either pay up – or cash out. That isn’t much of a choice. For many, the only option is to move further out to face an even worse commute and everything that comes with it. More hours on the road; less time with family; increasing transportation costs that eat up the savings of more affordable housing."

The city of Austin held elections for city council on November 4, 2014. The candidate filing deadline was August 18, 2014. Because of redistricting and term limits, there was no incumbent for District 8.[2] The candidates were Rebecca A. Bray, Eliza May, Darrell Pierce, Edward S. Scruggs and Ellen Troxclair. Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the general election, the top two vote-getters - Scruggs and Troxclair - faced each other in a runoff election on December 16, 2014.[3][4] Troxclair was the winner.[5]
