Campaign themes
2014
Wright listed the following issues on his campaign website:[5]
- Same sex marriage
- "I don't think the federal government has any business in marriage. There is no moral or ethical purpose served with government being in marriage at all."
- Medicare
- Excerpt: "We need to stop the mandate that everybody participate in Medicare and allow market-based decisions between doctors and their patients."
- Minimum wage
- Excerpt: "I think minimum wages are generally a bad idea. It encourages employers to seek out highly-skilled employees and use fewer of them...Most people receiving minimum wage are young people or people living in a place with other people. It shouldn't be a living wage. It happens there are mature, seasoned workers that choose minimum-wage jobs, and sometimes their skill sets means that all the jobs they can get. It's utterly false that we have to provide a living wage for everyone."
- Gun control
- Excerpt: "I would seek to reduce laws that limit gun ownership. I think our Second Amendment is very clear."
- Ebola
- Excerpt: "I think controlling Ebola's entrance into these United States should be the priority. I'm a supporter of open borders, in general, but one of the areas we need to guard against is communicable diseases."
- Immigration
- Excerpt: "I think there should be a pathway to legality, but not full citizenship. Many of these people are driving without licenses, problems in the workplace, and in their own homes and they need a way to deal with people around them in an honest way instead of hiding because of illegal status... I think we need to do a better job of [controlling the border]. And the border we need to deal with is Mexico and maybe some of the ports that would receive stowaways on ports. At the same time we need to address some of the magnetism that brings them here in the first place. What we need to do is stop the war on drugs. The war on drugs contributes considerably to the illegal immigration."
- Healthcare
- Excerpt: "[The Affordable Care Act] is it not affordable and it is not caring. We need to move more towards market-directed health care. No service should be mandatorily purchased under penalty of law. We should repeal it and move more towards a competitive relationship."
- Environment
- Excerpt: "I believe there is climate change. I grew up around scientific minds, my dad was a chemist, I worked around nuclear power plants. Climate change has come and gone over the years. We should not have our government subsidizing one agenda over another."
- Gas tax
- Excerpt: "I think we should cut the waste in our transportation system. We have roads underused. We have cosmetic improvements. I think we should stop the leaks in road repair funds and make some tough decisions. In my little county that is losing its population, county officials routinely have to make tough decisions about returning roadways back to their original property owners."
- Drugs
- Excerpt: "I think we should legalize all drugs, starting with medical marijuana."
