Gary Johnson is a superior court judge for Pierce County Superior Court, Washington. He was appointed to fill the vacancy left by D. Gary Steiner in February 2011.[1] Johnson filed for election in 2016 and won automatically because he was the lone candidate to seek the office.

Biography

Judge Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Puget Sound. He later earned his law degree with honors from the UPS Law School in 1982.[1] In 1987, Johnson joined Kram, Johnson, Wooster & McLaughlin. He also served as a contract city prosecutor for the city of Gig Harbor and handled matters that came before the municipal court, including DUIs, domestic violence charges and gross misdemeanor assaults. [1]

Prior to his appointment, Johnson served as pro tem judge for Kitsap County District Court and the Port Orchard Municipal Court. He has also handled a few cases as a pro tem judge for the Pierce County Superior Court.[1]

Elections

2016

Washington held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. Candidates for district and superior court seats had to file for election by May 20, 2016. Primary elections were held on August 2, 2016, for six seats where more than two candidates filed for election.

Johnson won election without appearing on a ballot in 2016 because no other candidates emerged by the May 2016 filing deadline.[2] In counties with a population that is greater than 100,000, if only one superior court candidate files for election for a judgeship, that candidate is automatically elected and the county does not hold a general election for the seat. According to the 2010 census, the following counties have a population greater than 100,000:[3]

2012 evaluation

The Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association placed Johnson as 8th out of the 22 Pierce County judges, giving him a 88.3 percent positive rating.[4]
