Campaign themes
2014
Amedore's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[3]
Property Tax Relief
- Excerpt: "Stop unfunded mandates -- Albany can no longer to kick the can down the road and shift the burden of onerous mandates down to the localities who then pass it on to the taxpayers. We need a strict ban on unfunded mandates."
Job Creation/Economic Development
- Excerpt: "Decreased regulations -- New York State imposes over 750,000 regulations on our businesses. The burdensome red tape and bureaucracy are crushing our small businesses. We need regulatory reform, including reform of the Scaffold Law, to make it easier for businesses to succeed in New York."
Education
- Excerpt: "Reform Common Core -- The implementation of Common Core was deeply flawed. While we need to ensure high standards in our classrooms, those standards should be developed with local input from parents, teachers, and administrators. We cannot pigeon-hole our students into a one-size-fits all method passed down by Washington bureaucrats."
Energy
- Excerpt: "Elimination of the 18-A -- This onerous tax that is driving up the utility bills of consumers throughout the 46th Senate district needs to be eliminated immediately."
Restoring the Public Trust
- Excerpt: "Term Limits -- I support term limits for our elected representatives."
- Excerpt: "Pensions -- We need to immediately strip pension benefits from any elected representative who is convicted of public corruption."

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was July 10, 2014. The New York State Senate was a battleground chamber that Ballotpedia identified as having the opportunity to switch partisan control in 2014. The New York Senate had a difference in partisan balance between Democrats and Republican of three seats, or 4.8 percent of the chamber. District 46 in the Senate was identified by Ballotpedia and WAMC Northeast Public Radio as a battleground district that could determine control of the New York State Senate. In this district, incumbent Cecilia Tkaczyk (D) was defeated by former state senator George Amedore (R) in a rematch of 2012. In 2012, the official results deemed Amedore the winner, but county election officials opened 91 new ballots in January 2013 which eventually gave Tkaczyk an 18 vote lead.[11]

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
