Gov. Hickenlooper to appeal ruling to state Supreme Court
December 23, 2011
Colorado: Governor John Hickenlooper will appeal a recent school funding decision to the Colorado Supreme Court. Earlier this month, Sheila A. Rappaport of the Second Judicial District, found that the system used in the state to fund schools violates the state constitution.[1]
The suit against the state was filed by parents and twenty-one separate school districts. They contend that the schools need four billion dollars to make up for inequalities in funding. This number is more than half of the state's annual budget.[2]
The governor is appealing the ruling because the court provided no framework for correcting the problem. Regarding a solution, Rappaport only said that the current system may stand while the Colorado State Legislature devises a new plan.[1]
