Michigan: On Friday, Governor Rick Snyder appointed two new members for the Court of Appeals. Michael Riordan, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, will succeed Brian Zahra in the First District Court of Appeals. Mark Boonstra will join the Third District Court of Appeals, succeeding Richard Bandstra. Boonstra is also an attorney, though in private practice.[1]

Of the appointments, Governor Snyder said, "Mike and Mark both bring tremendous legal experience to the courts. These individuals are highly respected by the legal and judicial communities and I am confident they will serve as excellent judges."[1]

Both new judges will have to compete for their seats in the 2012 election if they would like to continue serving. The appointments of Riordan and Boonstra are the governor's first appointments to the Court of Appeals.[1]
