Former Hopi Junior High teacher Charlene Youvella presented recall petitioners for Superintendent Dr. Gregory Sackos and Hopi Jr./Sr. High School Governing Board member Troy Lomavaya at a school board meeting on December 8, 2015.[1] Lomavaya resigned from the board before the recall could go to a vote.[2]
Youvella said that she had tried for several months to get on the school board agenda in order to discuss the school's areas of non-compliance. She said that there was a lack of transparency and communication between the board and its constituents. "No one has listened to the voice of the students. This is not about Troy or Dr. Sackos. This is about the students," she said.[1]
At the same meeting, Superintendent Sackos resigned from his position, saying that he had accepted a job as interim superintendent of Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community School. The community school is closer to Sackos' home in Scottsdale, where he said he planed to spend more time with his two daughters.[1]

Response from Dr. Gregory Sackos
Sackos told the Navajo Hopi Observer that anytime leadership makes a decision, someone will disagree. There were several group decisions made that some people didn't like. "Every decision I made was in the best interests of the students," he said. He also told the newspaper that he had applied for the job at Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community School before the petitions began circulating.[1]
