The Judicial Update

August 27, 2012

Illinois: Judge Joseph C. Polito, of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois, has admitted to viewing pornography on multiple occasions on his courthouse computer. His admission was filed with the Illinois Courts Commission in mid-August. The judge acknowledged his violation of the code of judicial conduct, specifically the section that instructs each judge to "conduct himself in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary."[1] He has voluntarily sought treatment.

About four months prior to Polito's admission, the Chicago Sun-Times had exposed the situation. The Sun-Times has also filed disciplinary charges, so it is now up to the Illinois Courts Commission to decide whether to discipline Polito with a reprimand, termination, or something in-between.[1]
