Iowa Personhood Amendment (2010)

The Iowa Personhood Amendment did not appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot in the state of Iowa. The measure was introduced by Representative Dwayne Alons. The measure would have mandated that the state recognize human eggs as a person, and therefore would result in the cease of abortions in Iowa.[1]
The measure was being proposed by Alons because he argued that life begins at conception and should be preserved "from the very beginning of the biological process."
Path to the ballot
A majority vote was required (in two successive sessions of) the Iowa General Assembly to place a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on the ballot. Iowa is one of 11 states that requires this process. Legislative session concluded without the measure being sent to the ballot.
