Cox defeated Michael J. Kennedy in the primary election on June 5, winning 57.6% of the vote.[4][5]

About the match-up, Cox said, "I have no idea why Mr. Kennedy challenged me specifically. I couldn’t tell you. I have been trying to run a very low- key and judicial campaign. I have not tried to bad-mouth anybody, and I have not sought partisan endorsements, because I don’t think it’s appropriate."[2]

Cox has refused to accept donations, but has accepted $500 from Judicial Excellence Together, the PAC of the California Judges Association. All other activity of his campaign was personally financed.[2]
