Louisiana elections use the majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Education
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
My husband is my greatest inspiration. His strength and perseverance inspires me to be a better person for our family and my students.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibility for someone elected to BESE is to ensure that the best interests of our students and educators are being served when policies are created and revised.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like for our state's public education system to rise from its consistent ranking of 48th in the nation. I would like for the gains we have made to be based on merit and not lowered standards for proficiency.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The first historical event that I remember was the Challenger launch. I remember watching it live on the television in my first grade classroom.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job in high school was in fast food. I worked for Chick-fil-A for 2 years.
What is your favorite book? Why?
One of favorite books from childhood is 'A Taste of Blackberries.' It's hard to explain, but there was just something about this book that stuck with me.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
If I could be any fictional character, I would have to choose to be Doctor Who. Not only would I get to travel the universe saving people, but I would also get to witness history while it was happening thanks to his time machine, the TARDIS.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Thanks to my 2 year old, the theme song to either Peppa Pig or Paw Patrol is usually stuck in my head.
What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?
The primary job of a school board member is to protect the public school system and advocate for its students and educators. School board members should create and revise policies that serve the best interests of the students and educators in their school system.
Who are your constituents?
My constituents are all the citizens of the district including the students.
How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?
The first way to support the diversity is to acknowledge that it exists. From there, I would reduce standardized state testing and the impact that it has on our students, teachers, and schools. We would then need to differentiate the types and levels of support given to students, educators, and schools because they are diverse with different needs.
How will you build relationships with members of the broader community? Which groups, organizations, stakeholders will you specifically target?
When it comes to public education, all citizens are stakeholders. By continuing my presence on social media and attending local school board meetings, I can connect with the members of my district.
What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?
Aside from teachers, the greatest advocates for our students are their parents. Through social media, I plan on letting parents know what is happening at the state level in regards to public education policy. I will also be available to discuss concerns that parents have with them.
What issues get in the way of quality education? How would you address these obstacles?
Education reform influence from business and industry leaders has created the greatest obstacle to quality education in our state. By reversing these reforms and giving our local school boards the authority to choose the best curriculum materials for their students, we can begin to overcome these obstacles.
What constitutes good teaching? How will you measure this? How will you support advanced teaching approaches?
Good teaching means adjusting your lesson to fit the needs of your students. A good teacher can adjust the lesson based on how the students are responding. Teacher effectiveness is best measured through observation and informal assessments. Teachers are always researching new approaches and techniques. This can be supported at the local level through more professional development opportunities.
What type of skills should students be learning for success in the 21st century?
Our students should be learning the same skills that have always been taught. Our students still need foundational skills in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Schools should include courses for trade skills as well as computer and information technology.
