Jefferson Transit Sales Tax Increase (February 2011)
A Jefferson Transit Sales Tax Increase measure was on the February 8, 2011 ballot in the Jefferson transit area, which is in Jefferson County.
This measure was approved
- YES 7,088 (56.38%)
- NO 5,484 (43.62%)[1]
This measure sought to increase the current sales tax rate by .3 percent in order to help maintain transit public bus services in the county. Supporters hoped that residents would see that this was just to maintain current services and would approve the measure.[2] Transit officials approved their next year budget, not taking in to account this measure in case it would have failed. The new budget would mean that jobs will be cut and services would be reduced since there would not be enough funds to maintain the current level of service. Since the measure did get approved, the budget will be amended.[3] The transit board expected an addition of near $1.1 million a year since this measure was approved it will bring the total sales tax of the county to 9 percent.[4]
Support
A letter written in favor of this measure noted that it was important to maintain transit services because they benefit so many residents in the transit area. Maintaining these services was also important to greater transit as a whole, this is just one part of an interconnected system which many depend on.[5]
